REVIEW 2021: DJI Spark
Updated: Jan 21, 2021
The spark claims to seize the moment, the moment that inspired you.
DJI Spark is not an ordinary FPV drone; it possesses the DJI s signature technology to mark the race in the image and video quality. And it truly seizes the moment as it can even recognize your gestures. So it will not miss out on any wave or hurrah to it.
Being a mini drone, Spark leaves behind even the Mavic Pro in its compactness. DJI dominates in the drone market because it enhances the usability of each new model more than before. And this is the reason drone enthusiasts sneak on for every new launch.
The durability and lightweight make the Spark ready for any expedition with its most stable flights for the most stunning clicks.

How Efficient is DJI Spark’s Design?
The DJI Spark mini drone has been designed to be fast and agile. What shortcomings it has it makes it up with its incredibly small yet appealing design. This mini drone is foldable, portable, compact, lightweight, and literally fits in the palm of your hand.
DJI’s Second Smallest Drone:
The DJI Spark redefines the word mini drone as it is easily as small as a can of pop. That’s right, this mini camera drone weighs only 300 grams and measures 5.5 x 14.3 x 14.3 cm (h, w, d) when folded.
Its size and lack of weight are among the most appealing things about this mini drone. Furthermore, you can expect it to be fast, nimble, and agile because of its compact, sleek, and lightweight design.
Even though it won’t fit as nice as an AirSelfie in your pocket, you can barely feel its weight in a backpack. When folded, the Spark’s arms do not fold down like the Mavic Pro.
Unique Structure and Personalization:
The DJI Spark looks a lot like the DJI Mavic Pro but smaller. It has an angular body while the camera is located underneath the front sensor array.
Even though its arms don’t fold like the Mavic Pro, you can turn it into a compact package by folding the propellers. Another design difference in this mini drone is that it has stubbly feet rather than having extended landing gear.
This means that when landing the drone onto your palm, it would be comfortable enough to hold. However, its stubbly feet make it a little challenging to land on rocky or uneven surfaces.
That said, when it comes to personalization, DJI Spark is one of the few mini drones which come in a variety of attractive colors. You can buy this mini drone in Lava Red, Alpine White, Sunrise Yellow, and Meadow Green.
Body and Build:
When it comes to the mini drone’s body, it feels pretty hard and dense despite its small body. The drone’s body has almost zero visible seams, while the limbs are sturdy.
When it comes to setting up your DJI Sparks mini drone, it only takes a few seconds to attach the propeller guards, turn it on, and link to your smartphone through the DJI Go 4 app.
The DJI Spark has been specially built for speed. It can soar through the air because of its aerodynamic profiles because of which it experiences minimal wind resistance.
Which DJI Spark Features Stand Out?
The Spark is a compact quadcopter that offers impressive features from a camera with motorized stabilization to vision and GPS-based navigation. Here are the top features offered by this spectacular mini drone.
The PalmControl Feature:
The feature that sets the DJI Spark apart from its brothers is the exciting gesture control or the Palmcontrol feature. This feature lets you skip command and controller and fly your mini drone with just a wave of your hand.
The gesture recognition works simply by enabling the app’s advanced gestures and then launching the drone from your palm. It will then hover in front of your face for facial recognition by having your face in view of the camera.
Once it has a lock on your face, green lights on the mini drone will signal that it's under your command. Now you can simply move the drone left, right, up, and down by waving your hands.
You can even take selfies with this feature by either making a frame with your fingers or waving and raising your arms. The shot is taken after a 3-second timer, which gives you enough time to pose.
Smart Video Modes and QuickShot:
Now get cinematic and vibrant shots with the Quick Shots to feature in your DJI Spark mini drone. The camera on the mini drone allows you to shoot 1080p video footage and 12 MP photos.
The camera has a ½.3-inch CMOS sensor and an f/1.6 lens wide angle along with a 25mm field of view. You can take mesmerizing photos with Pano-Sphere and Pani-180-degree special shooting modes.
The mini drone offers a variety of video shooting modes, which will make your footage look professional. These include:
- Helix, which lets the drone spiral around the subject and fly upward
- Dronie, which allows the drone to fly upward and backward while having the camera locked on the subject
- Rocket mode lets the drone ascend while pointing the camera downward
- Circle mode allows the drone to circle around a specific target
The Photo modes include auto exposure bracketing, single shot, intervals from two to sixty seconds, and 3-frame burst shooting.
This feature requires no transmitters or GPS bracelets for tracking a subject. You simply tell the Spark who or what to track, and it will recognize and detect a number of people and common subjects.
The mini drone can track animals, riders, bikes, and vehicles. Following are the two settings available in this feature:
Profile: It allows the drone to follow the subject from a fixed perspective
Trace: In this setting, the drone tracks the target from behind or in front and can even circle it.
The DJI Spark is packed with a number of safety features such as Geo-fencing and FlightAutonomy systems. The Gro-fencing features prevent the drone from flying into no-fly zones through the GPS.
The FlightAutonomy system allows the drone to accurately sense obstacles up to 15-inch away, hover accurately with VPS assistance at up to 98-inch, and safely land.
The system allows the drone to carry out these actions with the help of a vision positioning system (VPS), the main camera, a 24-core controller, GPS, 3D object sensing, and a high-precision IMU.
RTH (Return to Home):
Another safety that comes quite handy is the Return to Home feature. This feature allows the mini drone to land itself and return to its take-off point wherever the GPS is available.
The RTH feature is activated when you press the RTH button on the app when the controller signal is lost, and when the battery gets too low, the feature is activated automatically. As the drone returns, it will maneuver around obstacles.
The TapFly Feature:
This feature in the DJI Spark allows you to translate your touch on your phone’s screen into a heading through software. It means that whenever you would like the drone to change the direction you can simply tap somewhere else on your screen.
You can translate the touch into a heading that would include actions like descend and climb. Your mini drone will immediately turn to the new destination whenever you tap the screen.
The feature offers two modes which include:
- While maintaining altitude, tap the screen and fly to that spot
- Tap on the screen and keep flying in that direction
- Fast and agile
- Incredibly small, lightweight, and fits anywhere
- Exciting gesture control feature
- Comes in a variety of colors
- Intelligent flight modes
- Automatic quick shot modes
- Affordable mini drone
- Includes battery charging hub, set of replacement propellers, shoulder bag, and additional battery
- Foldable and weighs only 300 grams
- PalmControl and PalmLaunch feature
- Easy to fly and set up
- Short flight time
- Spotty Wi-Fi connection
- Hit and miss with gesture controls
